[00:27.5 – 00:31.7] Uh, at any rate, um, this is the rest of the, the bedroom now.
[00:31.7 – 00:37.7] But it was, uh, it was a very moving experience, you know, and, uh, you have those types of experiences.
[00:37.7 – 00:38.5] Of course, this is Dr.
[00:38.5 – 00:45.5] Bob at, at med school and, uh, you know, he originally was at the University of Michigan, got kicked out, went to Rush to finish up where…
[00:45.5 – 00:52.9] When we went down to the All Chicago Open, we were here for the Fourth Archives up in Chicago, and we went by, uh, the Rush hospital where he finished up.
[00:52.9 – 00:53.7] It’s kind of neat.
[00:53.7 – 00:59.1] Just pretty run down, but it’s another piece of AA history.
[00:59.1 – 01:00.0] These are some old books.
[01:00.0 – 01:01.2] I don’t know if– I don’t think they’re Dr.
[01:01.2 – 01:08.2] Bob’s books, but this is the notorious bathroom and, uh, it’s quite a legend with this door here.
[01:08.2 – 01:09.1] You know, Dr.
[01:09.1 – 01:17.3] Bob used to throw, put the pint bottles in his gloves, throw them up on the roof, and then come in through this door and pick them up ’cause Ann would frisk him at the door, you know what I mean?
[01:17.3 – 01:24.4] So, but when he got done, he’d actually throw some of them, pull out these drawers and throw them down in there.
[01:24.4 – 01:28.2] But also he used to, uh, we come back…
[01:28.2 – 01:34.4] I don’t think I have a shot of it, but in the hallway there’s some more, uh, ah, you can’t see it here, but there were some more drawers.
[01:34.4 – 01:44.5] But, um, when I asked Smitty about that when we were going through it in February, and he said, uh, “Oh, no, we used to, he used to do it up here, too.” And so, yeah, and then he’d, he’d take them up on
[01:44.5 – 01:45.0] the roof.
[01:45.0 – 01:48.7] And also, but, um, when we came back for Founders’ Day, they, they…
[01:48.7 – 01:58.7] When we were doing that, uh, one of the trustees said, “Yeah, we found these bottles.” So when we came back, they had the drawer open with, like, plexiglass over with some of the bottles they found right there to sh- kind of show you how it, it
[01:58.7 – 01:59.1] happened.
[01:59.1 – 02:00.5] So it’s kind of a neat thing.
[02:00.5 – 02:03.8] But here you can see the porch, uh, that he threw the stuff up on.
[02:03.8 – 02:07.2] There’s a better shot of it, but that’s where we’re coming from.
[02:07.2 – 02:10.9] And, and they come around, and then this, uh, leads over here.
[02:10.9 – 02:21.0] Now they bought the house next door, which leads to this walk, leads back to, and that’s where they have the archives, uh, which are in, uh, in the midst of being
[02:21.0 – 02:21.5] worked on.
[02:21.5 – 02:25.9] But they come in here and, uh, you can take a tour.
[02:25.9 – 02:27.6] But this is the front of that house.
[02:27.6 – 02:34.7] And as you go in here, they have all kinds of old pamphlets and you see little Sis-Sister Ignatia on there.
[02:34.7 – 02:37.2] I wanna talk a little bit more about her towards the end.
[02:37.2 – 02:38.8] Um, I don’t know.
[02:38.8 – 02:40.0] How are we doing on time anyway?
[02:40.0 – 02:40.4] We…
[02:40.4 – 02:44.9] I get lost in these things and just keep moving, but, oh, okay.
[02:44.9 – 02:50.9] But anyway, these are some of the old early, uh, pamphlets in there, and these are just some photographs.
[02:50.9 – 02:52.5] There’s Sister Ignatia on the left.
[02:52.5 – 02:58.5] That, uh, little medicine cabinet was a duplicate of what Dr.
[02:58.5 – 02:59.2] Bob would have used.
[02:59.2 – 03:03.2] But now since then they’ve actually got some of the actual medicine chests that Dr.
[03:03.2 – 03:03.9] Bob had.
[03:03.9 – 03:06.6] Now they’re in, in this, uh, archives house, if you will.
[03:06.6 – 03:10.0] And these are just some other photos.
[03:10.0 – 03:10.9] Of course, uh, Dr.
[03:10.9 – 03:16.1] Bob and Ann there on the left, and of course, Bill and Lois here.
[03:16.1 – 03:17.8] It’s kind of neat.
[03:17.8 – 03:20.8] But you go through and there’s a little oil painting.
[03:20.8 – 03:23.0] But y-you can go and see all this stuff.
[03:23.0 – 03:23.7] You can’t really get…
[03:23.7 – 03:24.6] You can just get an idea.
[03:24.6 – 03:25.9] Now these are a bunch of the old…
[03:25.9 – 03:29.6] Some of these are old Oxford Groups books, Shoemaker books and stuff.
[03:29.6 – 03:33.0] It’s kinda hard to see with the glare.
[03:33.0 – 03:35.4] Then the grapevines up on the top there.
[03:35.4 – 03:39.0] Um, and here’s some more stuff.
[03:39.0 – 03:43.3] Uh, and there’s Smitty and, uh, I guess that must be Sue in the picture.
[03:43.3 – 03:44.4] Yeah.
[03:44.4 – 03:48.2] Um, just to give you a feel.
[03:48.2 – 03:57.6] And like some of these, you can’t really see it that well, but some of those are old big books up on the front in different languages and stuff on the top left there.
[03:57.6 – 04:00.3] But really you gotta go through and tour.
[04:00.3 – 04:06.9] And this, On the Tail of a Comet, that’s a book about the life of Frank Buchman, and that’s Frank on the left there as well.
[04:06.9 – 04:08.4] He was the founder of the Oxford Group.
[04:08.4 – 04:12.5] He says, “Trying to stay out of the picture,” but he got part in there, but doesn’t matter.
[04:12.5 – 04:16.9] This one book down here, Extraordinary Living for Ordinary Men, that’s a Sam Shoemaker book.
[04:16.9 – 04:18.1] It’s another great book.
[04:18.1 – 04:20.1] The old Oxford Group stuff.
[04:20.1 – 04:23.8] Here, My Utmost for His Highest is a book Dr.
[04:23.8 – 04:26.7] Bob used to read for morning meditation by Oswald Chambers.
[04:26.7 – 04:30.9] Of course, Fo-Fulton Oursler, he was involved in the, uh…
[04:30.9 – 04:33.3] Was it the Liberty article, Bob?
[04:33.3 – 04:34.6] I’m trying to remember.
[04:34.6 – 04:35.6] I think that’s what it was.
[04:35.6 – 04:38.5] At any rate, these are all old Oxford Group books
[04:40.0 – 04:44.0] These are the Father Fo- uh, well, Father John Doe records.
[04:44.0 – 04:49.4] And, uh, you know, for the, uh, the Golden Book series on the various items.
[04:49.4 – 04:52.3] And, you know, we heard a lot about it the last year in Louisville.
[04:52.3 – 04:54.9] The fellow who did the presentation, that was wonderful.
[04:54.9 – 05:03.2] Um, oh, this little rack here, you see it says Kinzler’s– Kistler’s Donuts.
[05:03.2 – 05:07.4] That was the first coffee shop that AAs went to after the meeting.
[05:07.4 – 05:10.0] But it’s out of business now.
[05:10.0 – 05:12.2] But, uh, it’s kind of a neat little thing.
[05:12.2 – 05:15.5] And that’s– this is actually the– what used to be the Kistler Donut Shop.
[05:15.5 – 05:20.2] So, uh, it’s kinda neat to realize how long that’s been going.
[05:20.2 – 05:22.4] This is the Akron City Hospital.
[05:22.4 – 05:22.9] This is where Dr.
[05:22.9 – 05:25.2] Bob first started practicing.
[05:25.2 – 05:28.0] And this is the front of it.
[05:28.0 – 05:30.4] But this is the better part in the back here.
[05:30.4 – 05:34.3] You see that little black awning, if you will?
[05:34.3 – 05:36.8] This is the parking lot where Dr.
[05:36.8 – 05:44.1] Bob probably took his last drink, and probably snuck in those doors after those one– I think he had one or two bottles of beer.
[05:44.1 – 05:45.2] I can’t remember exactly.
[05:45.2 – 05:49.8] But went up and did the operation then slipped out and didn’t get back to the house till, like, nine at night.
[05:49.8 – 05:57.4] You know, and Bill thought he was– he had triggered the allergy, but in fact he was out making amends, which is still amazing to me to hear that.
[05:57.4 – 06:00.1] But this is the old city hospital.
[06:00.1 – 06:01.7] You haven’t– No.
[06:01.7 – 06:03.1] This, this is, uh, Dr.
[06:03.1 – 06:04.0] Bob’s office.
[06:04.0 – 06:05.3] It was up on the ninth floor.
[06:05.3 – 06:08.2] This is downtown Akron on Main Street.
[06:08.2 – 06:10.2] And then now you see it’s a Chapter Thirteen.
[06:10.2 – 06:11.8] It’s a bankruptcy attorney’s office.
[06:11.8 – 06:16.4] But, you know, it’s an interesting comment there.
[06:16.4 – 06:22.9] I don’t know what that means, but you could say he had a very successful practice being in a building like this.
[06:22.9 – 06:24.5] But, uh, that’s it.
[06:24.5 – 06:25.7] It’s in that key building.
[06:25.7 – 06:27.8] If you go there, you can visit all these sites.
[06:27.8 – 06:33.3] This is the King School group, um, where the King School were met.
[06:33.3 – 06:36.2] Uh, there’s a shot of the, the door.
[06:36.2 – 06:42.8] If you go there– If you go up to the Founders’ Day, you should really go up on Wednesday night and go to the King School group.
[06:42.8 – 06:45.3] It meets at, at eight o’clock, I think.
[06:45.3 – 06:48.6] And, uh, it’s another church that’s on the way from the school.
[06:48.6 – 06:49.5] It’s not at the school.
[06:49.5 – 06:51.9] But if you go there during the day on Thursday, they’re usually open.
[06:51.9 – 06:55.9] They’ll let you come in and see and look around, and they have a little plaque there.
[06:55.9 – 06:58.2] And went down to the room, and apparently Dr.
[06:58.2 – 07:00.0] Bob used to sit in the corner seat.
[07:00.0 – 07:02.5] And after he passed away, no one would sit there for a couple of years.
[07:02.5 – 07:11.7] But then, uh, finally some newcomer just came in and sat down, and they were– it was kind of a gas that somebody sit in his chair and, and, um, they never said nothing.
[07:11.7 – 07:14.3] But then they really got to thinking about it and said, “Well, that’s what Dr.
[07:14.3 – 07:15.2] Bob would have wanted.
[07:15.2 – 07:18.2] He wouldn’t want that seat to be empty.” So it’s kind of cool.
[07:18.2 – 07:24.8] But, uh, on the top here, this is, uh, this is the speech from Lincoln at the Gettysburg Address.
[07:24.8 – 07:31.1] “And the government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the earth.” It’s kind of neat.
[07:31.1 – 07:37.1] Uh, I’m a huge Lincoln fan, not that it matters, but it added some significance for me.
[07:37.1 – 07:40.2] But, uh, what is this?
[07:40.2 – 07:43.4] Uh, oh, this is the Mayflower again.
[07:43.4 – 07:44.4] You see on the bottom?
[07:44.4 – 07:47.1] That’s some of the intricate architecture.
[07:47.1 – 07:51.5] This was a– This was a state-of-the-art– This was the best hotel in town when Bill was there.
[07:51.5 – 07:56.7] This is where the, uh, the King School group meets now, this church here.
[07:56.7 – 08:01.3] And that’s kind of a nice steeple.
[08:01.3 – 08:02.4] And this is St.
[08:02.4 – 08:03.3] Thomas Hospital.
[08:03.3 – 08:04.3] This is where Dr.
[08:04.3 – 08:08.8] Bob and Sister Ignatia treated over five thousand drunks, as they say.
[08:08.8 – 08:11.7] You come, come in here, and they have a– See it up there, St.
[08:11.7 – 08:12.7] Thomas Hospital.
[08:12.7 – 08:20.3] But you go on up, uh, to the fourth floor, and they still have this, uh, um…
[08:20.3 – 08:22.5] They call this the first alcohol treatment center.
[08:22.5 – 08:25.8] Um, Ignatia Hall, that’s what they call it.
[08:25.8 – 08:30.9] Um, but while we were there, you know, it’s, uh, this is part of the chapel.
[08:30.9 – 08:32.3] This didn’t come out too well.
[08:32.3 – 08:35.4] But y-you ever see in the book, uh, Dr.
[08:35.4 – 08:36.9] Bob and the Good Old-Timers.
[08:36.9 – 08:38.9] This is some better shot of it.
[08:38.9 – 08:40.9] I need to get better at taking photos.
[08:40.9 – 08:46.2] But, um, you ever see that picture with, uh, Sister Ignatia playing on the organ?
[08:46.2 – 08:47.7] It was actually taken here.
[08:47.7 – 08:55.6] But they’ve since closed off the third floor access where the organ was, ’cause I says, “Where’s the organ?” You know, they said, “Oh, they closed it off.” I’m like, “What do you mean?
[08:55.6 – 08:58.2] I wanted to see, you know, where she was playing the organ,” you know.
[08:58.2 – 09:01.8] And, uh, but, uh, these are really beautiful artifacts.
[09:01.8 – 09:03.2] You get a chance to go look at it.
[09:03.2 – 09:08.6] You can see that one of the things that, uh, I brought along, and I’ll pass this along.
[09:08.6 – 09:17.2] Those of, uh, us that went to the third in the archives, Sister Ignatia used to hand out these scapulars and said, “Before you take a drink, you have to bring this back to me.” So
[09:18.0 – 09:19.5] I’ll pass that around if you wanna look at it.
[09:19.5 – 09:22.3] That’s the only one I got, or I’d, I’d bring some more.
[09:22.3 – 09:26.7] Uh, tell you what, if it comes to Lauderdale next year, I’ll bring some…
[09:26.7 – 09:27.5] I’ll get some more.
[09:27.5 – 09:29.8] A little bribe.
[09:29.8 – 09:30.3] Huh?
[09:30.3 – 09:32.5] No, no, it’s not a bribe at all.
[09:32.5 – 09:34.8] Uh- …
[09:34.8 – 09:35.2] it’s just…
[09:35.2 – 09:36.1] Well, I was…
[09:36.1 – 09:37.0] Let me tell you the story.
[09:37.0 – 09:40.7] Now, I was looking for a place to get them, and actually went up to Cleveland.
[09:40.7 – 09:45.2] We were in Akron, and we went up to Cleveland, and I went to the Intergroup there ’cause I figured…
[09:45.2 – 09:46.3] And they didn’t have any at St.
[09:46.3 – 09:48.4] Thomas, and so I didn’t have any there.
[09:48.4 – 09:49.8] And I asked them there, and they said…
[09:49.8 – 09:57.2] Somebody that happened to be there said they didn’t have any, but somebody that happened to be there said, “Well, why don’t you try this little store around the corner?” And I went there, and they had tons of them.
[09:57.2 – 09:59.6] So every time I go up there, I get a bunch of them.
[09:59.6 – 10:01.8] That’s, that’s where, where they came from.
[10:01.8 – 10:04.5] That, I don’t remember what this is.
[10:04.5 – 10:09.8] But, uh- Office.
[10:09.8 – 10:10.3] Yeah.
[10:10.3 – 10:12.1] That’s where his first office was.
[10:12.1 – 10:12.1] Yeah.
[10:12.1 – 10:18.2] Well, this must be his first office then because I think they used to eat downstairs here.
[10:18.2 – 10:20.0] There’s a deli or something down in here.
[10:20.0 – 10:21.4] Yeah.
[10:21.4 – 10:22.6] This is St.
[10:22.6 – 10:26.7] Vincent’s Hospital in Cleveland, and we went up there to…
[10:26.7 – 10:29.3] This is where Sister Ignacia went after she left St.
[10:29.3 – 10:33.3] Thomas, and, uh, it was an interesting story.
[10:33.3 – 10:37.6] I went there and, uh, you go there, and that’s St.
[10:37.6 – 10:38.8] Vincent apparently.
[10:38.8 – 10:46.5] And she named it Rosary Hall Solarium, which is RHS, which is Robert Holbrook Smith, which they didn’t figure that out for a while.
[10:46.5 – 10:49.1] But, uh, you know, that was her tribute to Dr.
[10:49.1 – 10:49.6] Bob.
[10:49.6 – 10:52.4] But it’s pretty, it’s a pretty neat little place.
[10:52.4 – 10:55.4] Um, and that’s but for the grace of God.
[10:55.4 – 10:57.3] They have this little picture here.
[10:57.3 – 10:59.4] Somebody told me who this was.
[10:59.4 – 11:01.1] I can’t remember now.
[11:01.1 – 11:05.5] But I like that little, “Take hope all ye who leave here.” That’s kind of what we have in AA.
[11:05.5 – 11:12.6] But this, this, uh, Rosary Hall now is not where it originally was, but this is on the floor where it used to be.
[11:12.6 – 11:22.8] ‘Cause when we got there, they said, “Listen, you know, let me call over there.” It’s, it’s now a Matt Talbot Women’s Retreat, “But let me call over there and see if I can take you where Sister Ignacia used to have their spiritual room.”
[11:22.8 – 11:24.2] And so they allowed us to do that.
[11:24.2 – 11:31.9] But I walked in this room, it’s only like a little hospital room size, maybe 15 feet wide or long and 12 feet wide, whatever it was.
[11:31.9 – 11:38.0] This picture of the Prodigal Son is there, and then you just walk in and you feel the spirituality just oozing out of the walls.
[11:38.0 – 11:38.9] It’s unbelievable.
[11:38.9 – 11:44.7] I can feel it just talking about it now and, uh, it’s another opportunity you should not miss on this journey.
[11:44.7 – 11:48.6] But it’s a beautiful, uh, little experience.
[11:48.6 – 11:50.3] And, uh, this is the chapel in St.
[11:50.3 – 11:50.9] Vincent’s.
[11:50.9 – 11:55.7] And I think that’s about all.
[11:55.7 – 11:57.3] I think there’s a couple more shots here.
[11:57.3 – 11:59.2] Oh, this is humility.
[11:59.2 – 12:02.3] This is the plaque that u- was supposed to have been on Dr.
[12:02.3 – 12:05.4] Bob’s desk, which I choose to believe it was.
[12:05.4 – 12:07.4] But, um, it’s a neat little deal.
[12:07.4 – 12:09.5] That’s it.
[12:09.5 – 12:15.4] So, um, um, we can Thank you very much.
[12:15.4 – 12:24.0] I don’t know if anyone has any questions.
[12:24.0 – 12:25.0] Oh, one other quick thing.
[12:25.0 – 12:27.6] Uh, this is a piece of wood from Dr.
[12:27.6 – 12:28.3] Bob’s house.
[12:28.3 – 12:30.5] They had to replace the, uh, steps.
[12:30.5 – 12:31.0] Oh.
[12:31.0 – 12:32.7] So they, uh…
[12:32.7 – 12:35.9] If you make a contribution, they’ll, they’ll let you have some of that.
[12:35.9 – 12:39.3] Yeah.
[12:39.3 – 12:39.7] Wow.
[12:39.7 – 12:42.5] New York has 12 counties?
[12:42.5 – 12:44.7] 12 counties?
[12:44.7 – 12:47.3] Area 49- Uh-huh …
[12:47.3 – 12:49.7] New York is divided into four, four areas.
[12:49.7 – 12:50.3] Uh-huh.
[12:50.3 – 12:52.4] And Area 49 has 12 counties.
[12:52.4 – 12:54.3] You know why there’s 12 counties in there?
[12:54.3 – 12:56.3] Do I know why there are 12 counties?
[12:56.3 – 12:59.9] 11 for the Yankees and one for the Johnny Reds to keep the Yankees straight, I guess.
[12:59.9 – 13:00.9] Oh, okay.
[13:00.9 – 13:02.6] Oh.
[13:02.6 – 13:02.6] Oh.
[13:02.6 – 13:02.6] Okay.
[13:02.6 – 13:05.8] Home state is Connecticut originally.
[13:05.8 – 13:08.0] And we have quite a display, too.
[13:08.0 – 13:09.4] We have that we show, too.
[13:09.4 – 13:10.7] Oh, you do?
[13:10.7 – 13:17.2] When I go around, I, I can take, uh, literally six of these tables and still have a lot more material.
[13:17.2 – 13:25.5] And I’ve just acquired the, um, you heard last night from Aaron, uh, about the Ground Zero material.
[13:25.5 – 13:28.0] Well, that was divided into three parts.
[13:28.0 – 13:36.7] Um, two steel plaques were made from the, uh, iron workers, uh, or actually engineers down there.
[13:36.7 – 13:39.4] But this large, and it says AA on them.
[13:39.4 – 13:45.1] One was given to New York Intergroup because they did a lot, uh, were instrumental with the meetings.
[13:45.1 – 13:47.8] And one was given to the general service office.
[13:47.8 – 13:54.5] And there was a book that everybody signed and wrote in, and that the general service office got.
[13:54.5 – 13:56.0] Uh, we’ll have to get my hand on that-
[13:57.2 – 14:07.8] I have the plaque of the meeting, five pictures of the, uh, area, and I have a big pad that everybody wrote on,
[14:07.8 – 14:08.9] uh, that I display.
[14:08.9 – 14:09.4] Cool.
[14:09.4 – 14:10.4] Okay.
[14:10.4 – 14:16.2] So that’s just a little about our– You know, I didn’t talk about our, our displays, but we have them.
[14:16.2 – 14:16.9] You know, we have a…
[14:16.9 – 14:17.6] Thank you.
[14:17.6 – 14:23.5] And I should say one other thing too.
[14:23.5 – 14:23.8] Yeah.
[14:23.8 – 14:33.9] You know, um, we, uh, one of our counties, the county I live in, Suffolk County, is probably one of the few counties in the United States and
[14:33.9 – 14:42.9] Canada that has a twenty-four-hour answering service volunteer maintained by the groups- That’s good …
[14:42.9 – 14:44.5] started in seventy-three.
[14:44.5 – 14:54.6] Past delegate on Long Island, he lived there, passed away, who was against this answering service, but was on the committee, and it was
[14:54.6 – 15:03.6] h– and I acquired all his material, and he has all the notes, uh, and the incept– you know, on the inception, on all the meetings- Wow …
[15:03.6 – 15:05.2] all the initial calls- Cool …
[15:05.2 – 15:06.4] the entire record.
[15:06.4 – 15:07.4] You know, it’s quite a find.
[15:07.4 – 15:13.3] So I have to pass that down to Suffolk’s, uh, intergroup to, for their archives.
[15:13.3 – 15:23.3] Yeah, I would just encourage you to, to use whatever materials you can to bring
[15:23.3 – 15:24.9] AA alive and carry this message.
[15:24.9 – 15:35.0] It’s, uh, my experience has been people love seeing these slides and seeing, you know, the– you talk about Bill pacing back and forth to the Mayflower, and you know, if you haven’t done that yourself, you should get up
[15:35.0 – 15:38.8] and go ’cause it’s a, it’s a great experience, and, uh, you can get that feeling.
[15:38.8 – 15:43.2] Try to capture the feeling Bill had when he was there, like, “Should I have a drink or should I call?
[15:43.2 – 15:48.0] What am I gonna do?” You know, and it’s not like you can just run down to the local meeting, you know, at that time, so.
[15:48.0 – 15:52.6] But it’s a neat experience to do that and go through the house, go through the Akron Intergroup archives.
[15:52.6 – 15:54.2] It’s a neat time.
[15:54.2 – 15:56.2] You should, you should spend a couple of days there.
[15:56.2 – 16:00.6] Do yourself a favor ’cause, uh, then you pique other people’s interest.
[16:00.6 – 16:03.3] Just like every time I talk about it, people just love hearing about it.
[16:03.3 – 16:07.9] They just wanna go, and, uh, we’re gonna have a group go up there again this year, so it should be cool.
[16:07.9 – 16:10.6] But, uh, it’ll be neat.
[16:10.6 – 16:15.9] I don’t know if anybody has any questions or comments, suggestions.
[16:15.9 – 16:17.8] When are you going up there?
[16:17.8 – 16:25.3] I’ll be up there Wednesday night for the King School meeting and go from there on, uh- I thought you said you were gonna have a group, though.
[16:25.3 – 16:26.6] Oh, yeah.
[16:26.6 – 16:32.9] Well, we’ve got probably at least ten people already that are gonna go, and maybe we’ll probably end up with twenty-five.
[16:32.9 – 16:36.7] I’ll fly up there and just go around to the sites and…
[16:36.7 – 16:46.7] You know, one of the things I didn’t stare, and, uh, I guess I should is, um, the neat thing about Fonda is that you go there on, on s- um, Sunday morning,
[16:46.7 – 16:48.8] and they have these motorcycle processions at Dr.
[16:48.8 – 16:49.8] Bob’s grave.
[16:49.8 – 16:53.4] But you go there by the gravesite, and they do a, a eulogy to Dr.
[16:53.4 – 16:57.9] Bob and, uh, and also to Sue ’cause Sue passed away this year.
[16:57.9 – 16:59.0] They incorporate that in.
[16:59.0 – 17:07.0] But at the end of that, then they have these fellows come along playing the bagpipes, playing Amazing Grace, and there’s not a dry eye in the place.
[17:07.0 – 17:07.8] Mm-hmm.
[17:07.8 – 17:09.9] It’s very, very moving.
[17:09.9 – 17:12.4] I would just like to make another comment.
[17:12.4 – 17:22.6] Um, one of the things when I, when I acquired my mat- the material I have, uh, as I was rotating to your position, you know, I have all these tapes, and I always said, “What
[17:22.6 – 17:24.0] do you do with them,” you know?
[17:24.0 – 17:34.0] So now when they have conventions, I play a tape, or I put up a sign and say at three o’clock, you know, this tape is being played,
[17:34.0 – 17:34.8] uh, audio.
[17:34.8 – 17:40.0] And it’s amazing, uh, you know, that people come and listen.
[17:40.0 – 17:40.1] That’s good.
[17:40.1 – 17:42.3] You know, I make a duplicate of the tape, obviously.
[17:42.3 – 17:43.0] Yeah.
[17:43.0 – 17:46.1] Uh, so that people come and actually listen.
[17:46.1 – 17:47.3] ‘Cause I said, “I have all this material.
[17:47.3 – 17:52.1] It just sits there, and it has no value unless,” I said, “why don’t I have people hear it?” You know?
[17:52.1 – 17:52.6] Yeah.
[17:52.6 – 17:55.5] And it’s like they’re just having another meeting, you know?
[17:55.5 – 18:04.3] That’s the main reason why I collect anything, unless it’s gonna have some use to the archive or to the area or to the district- Right …
[18:04.3 – 18:04.9] or to the intergroup.
[18:04.9 – 18:05.4] Right.
[18:05.4 – 18:07.2] I collect all the fancy stuff.
[18:07.2 – 18:07.7] Right.
[18:07.7 – 18:08.6] You know.
[18:08.6 – 18:09.2] Exactly.
[18:09.2 – 18:15.6] Don, we had a– Barry and I have a friend that, um- Barry has a friend …
[18:15.6 – 18:17.0] Silver Neal.
[18:17.0 – 18:18.2] It wasn’t, it wasn’t you.
[18:18.2 – 18:19.8] It wasn’t the Australian one, right?
[18:19.8 – 18:20.4] No, no.
[18:20.4 – 18:30.4] We had, we had a friend that got sober on, in, um, in November of nineteen forty, and, um, he was in Cleveland,
[18:30.4 – 18:34.7] uh, Sister Nation
[18:34.8 – 18:37.0] Put him up with a drop so he can get off of there.
[18:37.0 – 18:40.7] And, uh, and he went down, they took him down to Dr.
[18:40.7 – 18:41.5] Bob’s.
[18:41.5 – 18:44.3] So, you know, two guys took him down there and said, “Dr.
[18:44.3 – 18:53.4] Bob thinks if you’re good material, he’ll accept you as a member of AA.” And he went down there, and what– and he kept going to meetings there.
[18:53.4 – 18:57.3] What happened was that they would go upstairs to the second floor- Mm-hmm …
[18:57.3 – 19:00.5] get in front of the chairs and pray that Dr.
[19:00.5 – 19:03.1] Bob could put alcoholics up there.
[19:03.1 – 19:13.6] And they would pray, uh, down– all in front of those chairs, and then they would go downstairs, and that’s when,
[19:13.6 – 19:15.6] of course, would be the readings.
[19:15.6 – 19:16.0] Yes.
[19:16.0 – 19:21.5] But it was, it was just the AAs upstairs, and then it was everybody, you know, of course, the other.
[19:21.5 – 19:22.8] So there were only- Yes …
[19:22.8 – 19:23.5] a few people there.
[19:23.5 – 19:26.8] What was the guy’s name that came?
[19:26.8 – 19:27.2] That what?
[19:27.2 – 19:27.8] Took him there?
[19:27.8 – 19:28.8] No.
[19:28.8 – 19:30.5] Bob took him.
[19:30.5 – 19:32.3] When they moved together, remember?
[19:32.3 – 19:33.2] Clancy?
[19:33.2 – 19:33.3] Clancy.
[19:33.3 – 19:34.5] Clancy Udall.
[19:34.5 – 19:39.5] Clancy Udall was he, in fact- Was that the other friend of Berry’s?
[19:39.5 – 19:40.3] Oh, yeah.
[19:40.3 – 19:40.8] Yeah.
[19:40.8 – 19:42.7] Well, he was a friend of mine.
[19:42.7 – 19:43.9] He was our sponsor.
[19:43.9 – 19:44.7] No, I know.
[19:44.7 – 19:45.0] We knew him.
[19:45.0 – 19:45.5] We knew him before.
[19:45.5 – 19:51.9] Well, he, he, uh, he died in– on Founders’ Day in ninety-two?
[19:51.9 – 19:53.2] Ninety-one.
[19:53.2 – 19:53.6] Oh.
[19:53.6 – 19:56.1] Um, he had, he had fifty- Ninety-two.
[19:56.1 – 19:56.2] Ninety-two.
[19:56.2 – 19:57.2] He had fifty-one years.
[19:57.2 – 19:57.7] Wow.
[19:57.7 – 19:59.0] That’s wonderful.
[19:59.0 – 20:01.8] But, but back from, you know, from nineteen forty.
[20:01.8 – 20:02.2] Uh-huh.
[20:02.2 – 20:06.6] And, um, yeah, we got a lot of good stuff from him.
[20:06.6 – 20:06.8] Yeah.
[20:06.8 – 20:07.7] That’s neat.
[20:07.7 – 20:17.8] You know, I, I didn’t mention this, but I got sober, I actually got sober in Michigan through, uh, the Detroit area and Ann Arbor area AA, which was heavily influenced by Akron, which, um,
[20:17.8 – 20:20.0] Arthur Trowbridge got sober, stayed at Dr.
[20:20.0 – 20:24.1] Bob’s house for over a year in thirty-eight, thirty-nine timeframe, forty.
[20:24.1 – 20:26.8] So I went in and started AA in Detroit.
[20:26.8 – 20:28.8] So I guess, uh, somewhat.
[20:28.8 – 20:31.7] Then I moved to Florida after seven years of sobriety.
[20:31.7 – 20:36.3] So picked up under two hotspots of AA, I guess, for lack of a better word.
[20:36.3 – 20:38.1] But it’s neat.
[20:38.1 – 20:39.8] It’s, it’s a wonderful experience.
[20:39.8 – 20:42.6] To go a little further about Clancy, uh, Dr.
[20:42.6 – 20:44.4] Bob was Clancy’s sponsor.
[20:44.4 – 20:45.7] And then after Dr.
[20:45.7 – 20:47.6] Bob died, why, Dr.
[20:47.6 – 20:50.3] Bob sponsored Clarence Snyder.
[20:50.3 – 20:58.2] Clarence Snyder became Clancy’s sponsor, and Clarence came to Hawaii to visit, uh, Clancy.
[20:58.2 – 20:58.5] Mm-hmm.
[20:58.5 – 21:05.8] And we all went around the island with him, and he was there for, I don’t know, a week or so, and we had a really wonderful time.
[21:05.8 – 21:07.0] Eighty-one, yeah.
[21:07.0 – 21:17.4] And he was supposed to meet him at, uh, in Canada at, uh, the International in Montreal, and, uh,
[21:17.4 – 21:18.9] well, he died shortly before that.
[21:18.9 – 21:19.7] I see.
[21:19.7 – 21:23.4] It was nice to get acquainted with some of them old-timers.
[21:23.4 – 21:24.7] Yeah.
[21:24.7 – 21:33.5] Yeah, the one thing that we, I guess we should get a shot of is, uh, the home where Clarence Snyder started the first actual AA, the first group called Alcoholics Anonymous.
[21:33.5 – 21:33.7] Mm.
[21:33.7 – 21:35.5] But when they split off from Akron.
[21:35.5 – 21:36.6] It grew like mad.
[21:36.6 – 21:37.7] They told him it wouldn’t work.
[21:37.7 – 21:38.1] Yeah.
[21:38.1 – 21:39.3] But Dr.
[21:39.3 – 21:41.8] Bob actually went up to those meetings and supported them.
[21:41.8 – 21:43.0] Well, somewhat.
[21:43.0 – 21:43.1] Some.
[21:43.1 – 21:49.8] But they didn’t– they thought they– when he told them that he was gonna leave there, they said, “It’ll never work.” Well, that’s for good people trying to stop, too.
[21:49.8 – 21:50.0] Yeah.
[21:50.0 – 21:51.6] They didn’t, they didn’t want him to leave.
[21:51.6 – 21:53.0] Showed up in force.
[21:53.0 – 21:53.2] Yeah.
[21:53.2 – 21:53.7] Yeah.
[21:53.7 – 21:55.1] But it showed up in force.
[21:55.1 – 21:56.8] He ended up with almost six hundred people.
[21:56.8 – 21:57.4] Wasn’t drinking this time.
[21:57.4 – 21:58.2] Is that right?
[21:58.2 – 21:59.6] Wow.
[21:59.6 – 22:03.5] He, uh, yeah, there was fourteen people in, in, uh, Akron.
[22:03.5 – 22:03.8] Mm-hmm.
[22:03.8 – 22:05.9] Bob and Bill had about six in New York.
[22:05.9 – 22:06.3] Yeah.
[22:06.3 – 22:09.5] But Clarence had almost six hundred in Cleveland.
[22:09.5 – 22:15.5] It just beats the pits, well, with that seven articles in- Yeah, the Cleveland Plain Dealer …
[22:15.5 – 22:16.9] Plain Dealer and so forth.
[22:16.9 – 22:26.9] You know, that’s the neat thing about coming to these events too, is you get all this background history that you just, you know, through basically bouncing things around off each other, and, uh, it’s kinda neat.
[22:26.9 – 22:28.5] I guess we’re close to time, aren’t we?
[22:28.5 – 22:32.9] We have about five minutes if anybody wants questions.
[22:32.9 – 22:33.7] Go ahead.
[22:33.7 – 22:35.9] I, I have a question.
[22:35.9 – 22:46.0] Um, I, I’m not an archivist, and I’m really, uh, you all know a hundred thousand times more than I do, but I had understood
[22:46.0 – 22:56.3] that Bob wanted, um, his, uh, remembrance to be anonymous and that
[22:56.3 – 23:00.8] he didn’t want a lot of hoopla about having founded AA.
[23:00.8 – 23:02.4] And I can understand- Absolutely …
[23:02.4 – 23:06.7] this house being a museum, but I– it sounds to me as if it’s becoming a shrine.
[23:06.7 – 23:07.4] Mm-hmm.
[23:07.4 – 23:10.5] And, um, I, I’m a little concerned about that.
[23:10.5 – 23:13.4] And I wondered if any of you all, and some of you who know a lot more-
[23:14.9 – 23:23.4] That’s why the big banner is no longer up there at Bondar Stadium, because that was– there was a big flap created over that just because of what you said.
[23:23.4 – 23:28.9] And the big, uh, uh, shrine stuff, I don’t think that you’re gonna see that in the future.
[23:28.9 – 23:29.4] No, no.
[23:29.4 – 23:30.7] I think that’s a thing of the past.
[23:30.7 – 23:34.0] The foundation actually listened to everybody else.
[23:34.0 – 23:36.5] And so I think they’re going back to what Dr.
[23:36.5 – 23:37.5] Bob wanted.
[23:37.5 – 23:39.8] Look at his gravestone, and you can tell what he wanted.
[23:39.8 – 23:50.0] Yeah, see, we’re, we’re trying to push it that way too, and we know some people involved, so we’re trying to help to facilitate that type of movement more in line with a
[23:50.0 – 23:54.3] spirit of anonymity, you know, the spiritual foundation of all our traditions.
[23:54.3 – 23:58.2] And therefore, our co-founder’s place should be the same way, in my opinion.
[23:58.2 – 23:59.8] I mean, that’s just my opinion, but…
[23:59.8 – 24:01.2] Roy, you had your hand up?
[24:01.2 – 24:02.9] Yeah, my name is Roy, and I’m an alcoholic.
[24:02.9 – 24:03.6] Hello, Roy.
[24:03.6 – 24:04.2] Hi, Roy.
[24:04.2 – 24:11.5] And I’m supposed to be the, uh, the archivist of District Ten, Area Fifteen, which is, uh, Miami.
[24:11.5 – 24:17.7] And I, uh, I think the first one that was sent to this thing, you know.
[24:17.7 – 24:22.9] And you know, we AA people do some crazy stuff.
[24:22.9 – 24:25.8] You know- It’s true …
[24:25.8 – 24:28.4] next month we’ll be voting for officers.
[24:28.4 – 24:29.1] Mm-hmm.
[24:29.1 – 24:33.9] So I may not be the archivist after December.
[24:33.9 – 24:38.0] And then, then they spend this money to send me here, you know?
[24:38.0 – 24:39.9] I mean, I’m glad they sent me here.
[24:39.9 – 24:40.3] Roy, Roy, Roy.
[24:40.3 – 24:43.1] I’m, I’m really glad they sent me here.
[24:43.1 – 24:45.7] Well, you just have to remain a member of the committee, that’s all.
[24:45.7 – 24:46.9] That’s right.
[24:46.9 – 24:48.0] You pass that knowledge on.
[24:48.0 – 24:48.5] That’s right.
[24:48.5 – 24:56.2] But knowing how we work anyway, nobody might take the job, and I might have to- You might just look into it again …
[24:56.2 – 24:57.3] which I’d like to.
[24:57.3 – 24:58.0] I’d like to do that.
[24:58.0 – 24:58.6] I’d like to stay two more years anyway.
[24:58.6 – 24:59.2] That’s great.
[24:59.2 – 25:00.3] You know?
[25:00.3 – 25:03.4] I, uh, I really enjoyed this, uh- Well, let me tell you something.
[25:03.4 – 25:10.3] I, I view AA archives as a, as a lifelong journey, and, uh, that’s exactly what it is to me.
[25:10.3 – 25:20.3] It’s just a continuing process of educating people, helping them preserve things, and just keeping that old spirit alive because, you know, does anyone here know how far we can thin this thing
[25:20.3 – 25:26.1] out before it stops working, before we start killing people by sharing half the message or part of the message?
[25:26.1 – 25:30.0] I don’t, I don’t know where that point is, but I don’t wanna find out, so.
[25:30.0 – 25:35.3] There’s one thing you said too that really, really hit home with me about group history.
[25:35.3 – 25:35.7] Mm-hmm.
[25:35.7 – 25:39.5] I’ve started a, a, a binder for group history.
[25:39.5 – 25:39.9] That’s generous.
[25:39.9 – 25:40.3] Yep.
[25:40.3 – 25:43.1] And we have, uh- It’s great to- …
[25:43.1 – 25:49.9] a hundred groups in our area, and I sent to world service for a list, and they said eighty.
