I’d like to take this time, and very honored to introduce, and I probably got a lot of amends to make. I called her Crazy Betty. I think maybe she might make that correction. If I, if I misguided anybody into how many years of sobriety, she’ll correct that for me, too. So she’s here to clarify anything I may have spread in the last six weeks- -trying to introduce her. So at this time, this is Betty, Crazy Betty. Thank you. Hi, everybody. Um, can you hear me all right? Oh, yeah. I’m an alcoholic. I’m Betty and- Hi, Betty. A little, little mixed up. Uh, he said Crazy Betty. Well, they used to call me King Bat Betty, so. And I was married to a guy. My two brothers are here tonight, and their wives, and one wife, and my dear friends that I just met not long ago, and that’s the result of this. Um, my brothers would probably verify the Crazy Betty. I told Charles to come and get his wish tonight.

Anyway, uh, I am a recovering alcoholic, and, uh, by the grace of God and all of the AA people I’ve known throughout the years, most of them are in glory. Uh, we’ll go into that later. I knew Floyd slightly. Well, I knew him more because he came to San Francisco at our big meeting, our Christmas meeting, and I’ll tell you how I met Floyd. Uh, and I wanted to tell this story tonight, especially because my brothers, my two half-brothers are here, and I’m eighteen years older than one and sixteen years older than the other. So I, I drank sixteen years, and they’ve only seen me mostly with hangovers coming home to mother, but she wouldn’t let me drink. She wouldn’t give me a drink if my tongue was hanging out to the sidewalk. She had married three alkies, and she didn’t have any use for us drinkers. But, uh, I’m not like my mother. If a guy’s really hurting and sick, I’ve learned I will give him a drink if I couldn’t get him a DT cocktail or something.

And I’ve been in– I was exposed to AA when I was nineteen years old, and I got in a nut ward in San Francisco. It was right after the war. And, uh, I don’t know how I got there. Fighting, as usual, I suppose. And they took me to this nut ward downtown. And, uh, oh my lord. Every time I had gotten a nut ward, it means women or men, whatever. I could get in there with the really, really mentally ill. And I was off to the kill. I, I really didn’t wanna go to the nut ward. So consequently, when I got in trouble every time I drank, I was a periodic. I’d come to Sacramento, and I’d be so sweet and clean. I went to school with a lot of the guys and became policemen and firemen and everything else. And, uh, I guess they protected me. I don’t know. But my mother was, uh, had started out as a taxi dancer, a barmaid, taxi dancer to support my Indian brother and I before mother married a gambler. And these boys are the result of the gambler who supported us.
