============================================================
Hello, Bill O. This is Joe M., tape recording man from Chicago. And today is June the 7th. That's exactly one month after you had started out and made up that tape for me. I'll have this made up for you in a day or so. I can only record a few hours at a time. Today is Tuesday. It's about 2.30 in the afternoon. I'll be able to get a couple hours on here before I go to work. And I will talk to you more either at the end of the tape.
And I will try to let you know what kind of recordings I have. Although I have quite a few and you have quite a few, I would not want to get no duplicates of the ones I have already. This Charles J. that you sent me is a lot clearer than the one I have. Reverend Tom F., I've got a couple of his. He talked for us in Chicago here. I forgot what conference it is. And these tapes I have recorded at the conference. I have recorded six of the seven conferences we had here.
And the PA system we have in this McCormick place is very good, thereby making these recordings very clear. This Horace F., I've heard of him, but I don't believe I have had any recording of him, nor of Harold W. Eddie C., I haven't had any of him. I've never heard of him. I don't know where your wife got the idea that I wanted him, but seeing you gave me him, I will listen to him when I have time.
And H. T. B., I think I've got part of his recording when he was an emcee someplace. See, I've got a lot of tapes that I've received of these Blackstone retreats. I've never been there, but I've ran into people that moved to Chicago here from North Carolina who had these tapes, and I made exchanges with them for some of the ones that I had. At the present time, I'm still behind in these tapes. I still have a few to make for people.
I do not want to get involved too much in this taping business, as it does take up quite a bit of my time, and I would like to get my collection straightened out. However, I would like a talk by this Dennis M. I've heard so much about him, but I never did get a chance to hear him or his recording. I believe he's passed away, if I'm not mistaking. Now, this Dr. Bob recording you mentioned that you have, incidentally, I think it's the same one.
The recording I have is the one that they have in Akron, Ohio, and I believe it was taken in 1950 conference in Cleveland. You mentioned 1948, but what I will do, I will put this on, and that's where you will be able to see if this is the same one you have or not. If it isn't the same one, I would like to have that one, but chances are it is the same. I also have that five-minute recording of Dr. Bob too, so it must be the one and only recording that they do have of Dr. Bob, and that is the only one that I have been able to come across.
You mentioned you have quite a few movie stars. Well, I myself have this Jack B., Walter O.
[00:04:59]
I just got this Bill H. from a guy down in Madison who does exchange tapes with you.
[00:05:08]
I can't, Bill, I think it's O., the guy's name there, he gave me a copy of that. So if you have any, oh yes, I have Dick W., very good one of Dick W., and I can't seem to think of anyone else. You also mentioned this Dr. K. I would like to have him. Also, there is a priest who talked at the conference in Toronto. I haven't got the list with me at the present time, I'll tell you of him later on unless I forget.
But I myself have about 11 or 12 recordings of this Toronto conference. I'll let you know what I have. Then maybe you could fill up a tape like this here with what I don't have, or what I would like to have. Also, I don't know if I mentioned this, Dr. R. K., I would like to have talk of his. And that's about all I can think of at the present time. Like I said, I will more or less talk to you as this recording keeps going along here.
However, these talks will be on 3 ¾ inches per second. And the recordings will be on 1 7/8 inches per second. Another thing, I put this tape on 4 track here. I don't know if I will be able to fill up this whole tape, because if I fill up the whole 4 tracks, that will be approximately 16 hours. However, I will give you the Chicago conference, complete Chicago conference, which is about 9 or 10 hours.
And I will give you that Dr. Bob, and I will try to tell you of the people that I do have. And maybe we can get together and make a few exchanges. So, now I will put the first session of the 6th Chicago and Suburban Intergroup Conference, which was held at McCormick Place on April 30th and May 1st, 1966. I will enclose a program here, so you could more or less follow it. This is taken from the original tape. It was originally recorded on a 2,400-foot tape.
And then I more or less broke it up into 1200 and 1800 foot tapes, so I could more easily make copies for these different people. I more or less mentioned in that shorty, which I hope you had gotten, the 2 inch shorty. I haven't received no card or anything from you, but I believe you had gotten it. I have found that in making these tapes, I do make them for people that would like to make copies and exchange.
If they do not, I find that I have to charge them a fee, a small fee, such as a dollar per hour recording plus the tape, and make a mailing package there. So I more or less charge $3.50 for 1200 foot tape and $5 for 1800 foot tape recorded on 2 track on both sides. If I didn't, I'd be swamped. I'd have to give up my job and everything else to try to satisfy these people in making these recordings. Still, people think I'm getting rich on these here.
[00:10:02]
But as you probably know, what they are charging for these Toronto tapes or any one of these world conferences that they've had, they want anywhere from $7 to $8 a tape. That, I believe, is too much and I wouldn't charge anyone that. But I also do not try to complete with them and try to sell people recordings for half that price. I will give people different recordings, but these conference tapes, I will make them up just for my personal friends.
The other people want them, they can order them from these lawyers in Cincinnati. I did exchange a couple copies with them, but they don't care too much for exchanging. They would rather, more or less, sell a person a copy of what they have. So that's about all for now, Bill. I hope you and your wife and your loved ones are feeling well. I have a heat spell up here in Chicago, about 75 to 80 degrees.
So we are finally getting into a little warm weather. I've got my air conditioner in, it's not working at the present time, but it does come in on these hot, humid nights and cools the place off a little bit and the person is able to get some sleep. So I'll be talking to you on this tape on and off and I hope that you enjoy hearing this here. I'm sure that your wife enjoyed this conference. It was one of the good ones we did have.
We did have speakers from different parts of the country. Each and every one of them was good and I'll tell you about them later on. So bye for now and listen to the first session of the conference. Bye now.
