============================================================
Hello Bill, this is Joe M., this is the, uh, side two, track two, final side of the tape, try to give you a little run down, on the, this side here, this, uh, last little bit here, tribute to a dog, was, uh, taken off of a television show, Death Valley Days, in which, Ronald Reagan, was the, lawyer, in this, uh, story, and, uh, he was supposed to be, prosecuting, someone who killed a boy's dog, and, uh, when it came his time to sum up his case to the jury, he gave this tribute, and won the case, I've heard this quite some time ago, and I've been watching TV till it came on again, and, uh, I seen it, uh, listed, couple months ago, and I got my tape recorder set up to the television, and recorded it, and, uh, it's very good, a lot of truth to it, just before that, I've got, uh, Sister Ignatia, in Rosary Hall, talking to men patients, I got this copy, from the woman who talks on here just before that, her name is, May D., uh, I believe she's from Cleveland, Ohio, and, uh, she, came to Chicago, and was visiting somebody in one of the suburbs, and at one of the meetings they found out about her, so, uh, being here in Chicago, so I, a friend of mine called me and asked if I could play this Sister Ignatia tape at the meeting after this woman was through talking, well I did, and it's the first time I took two recorders to a meeting, because I wanted to record her, and, uh, I later got this copy of Sister Ignatia and copied it on with her talking, here, you mentioned, uh, about knowing Sister Ignatia, I thought you would like to have this copy of her voice, and, uh, before, oh, incidentally, I forgot to mention that, uh, uh, just before this tribute to the dog, is a shorty tape that I received from a friend of mine, Tiny E., in Buffalo, Iowa, and, uh, he got this little shorty tape from these people up in New Jersey, and it gives quite a rundown on Abby T., and, uh, incidentally, I would like a copy of his talk, because he was supposed to have been up in the Texas area for about seven years, I believe that's the longest period of time that he had been sober, seven or eight years, and, uh, he knew these people in Davenport, Iowa, and, uh, I did have a chance to meet him, I believe it was in the spring of 1960, just before the Long Beach, uh, convention, however, I didn't get a chance to go to the convention, I have a recording of, uh, Abby's talk, he only talks about, oh, fifteen minutes or so, I have his talks where he talks at Long Beach for a little while, but I would like to get a talk of his, uh, where he talks about himself, gives his story or something, I wonder if you have anything like that of him while he was up down, down, uh, in your Texas way.
Uh, incidentally, I received your second tape yesterday, and, uh, listened to the message, I didn't get a chance to listen to it, in fact, I didn't even listen to your other first tape, what I'll have to do, I'll have to cut down on some of these recordings and get caught up, because I've got so many tapes that I didn't listen to,
[00:05:17]
and, uh, so many of these new events keep coming up that, uh, I more or less can't keep up with them, and I'll have to slow down a little and take it a little easier, and, uh, today, I said I was going to get that tape in the mail definitely yesterday, it was the tenth, today is Saturday the eleventh, I know for sure I'll get it in today because I'm putting the last finishing touches on it with this talk here, something come up yesterday what kept me out of the house all day long and I didn't get a chance to do much recording, but I got up bright and early this morning, about 7.30 and started on this side here, which was the only thing to be completed, and I have gotten, uh, to this point, and, uh, I don't know whether I'll finish this tape or not, but you will have it, and, uh, I will paste this, uh, schedule of what's on the tape on, on, on top of, uh, the box there, and, uh, we'll send it to you in, at Brownwood, Texas, and, uh, maybe in about three or four days it'll get to you, and, uh, and, uh, you will, uh, have in it, more or less, the list of speakers that I've got there and, uh, some of them that you want, let me know and I'll put them on this other tape that I have here, but then again it may be a couple weeks before I get to do that because I'm still working on these conference tapes, I've got about three more complete conference tapes to make, but I, I had, had you waiting, I believe, long enough so I figured I'd get this to you before I got to those other ones.
So, uh, if you have time there or if you want to wait until you get this second tape back, either way, uh, uh, what you can do is give me those, uh, Toronto conference tapes that I, uh, have, have not got. The ones I have on here are the ones, are checked off are the ones I have and I think I will get this, hey, an industry, but there's not too much hurry on that, and I would like those two talks of Einar H..
I believe Einar makes, uh, uh, about the same talk there, but this one I have of him, it was, uh, made out in, uh, oh, at the, uh, Modesto, California, I believe, and, uh, was recorded by this fella that has that tape library up there, and, uh, I got this through one fella, a friend of mine in Indiana who exchanged tapes with a guy in Louisville, so you can see that these tapes really do get around, and, uh, I would like to have that Einar H.'s tapes, Dennis M., and, uh, let's see what else did I say, those Toronto conference tapes, and, uh, I, uh, more or less don't recall what other ones I mentioned to you, but there are quite a few of the conference, and you, you said you had, uh, all of them, but, uh, I don't, I wouldn't, uh, uh, the list that I am sending, well, you can check them off and see if they're all on there, the ones you have,
[00:10:00]
uh, and, uh, as you look at my list there, it's an old list, I have to bring it up to date, there's quite a few others from the New York and the East Coast, I've got Bill W.'s 31st anniversary dinner, got that from a friend of mine by the name of Tony W. in Ohio, he, uh, he had Bill send him a personal copy of it, funny thing, this, he got the copy, it was recorded on a five inch reel, uh, three and three quarters on each side, hour on each side, and the guy that mailed it to him charged him six bucks for it, hell, he could have put it on a 1,200 foot reel, and, uh, uh, been able to get it for half that price, I guess the guy just, maybe didn't have enough tape like that or something, uh, excuse me, I'm yawning or something, I guess I'm bored with my own talking or something, but, uh, as soon as I get free talking here, I'll put this, uh, in a box and, uh, seal it with all the other stuff and, incidentally, I'm gonna put in a program there of, uh, some kind of, uh, alcoholic studies that we're gonna have up here where Marty M. and a lot of other people are gonna be coming to it, I don't think I'll go to any of these sessions, I have quite a few of these people here, and, uh, as I said, I will be, am gonna try to slow down and take it easy.
Uh, one other thing, I was with some people there yesterday, and we were talking about this Keeley AA Roundup, and, uh, I don't know if you or anybody around your area ever went to that, that's in Dwight, Illinois, but the Keeley Institute was one of the oldest established dry cleaning places. By dry cleaning, I mean, uh, where they have these guys come over to dry out and get dehydrated and get back to useful activity again.
I heard that they had closed their doors due to the fact that they have so many of these state hospitals all over the country, and, uh, people, instead of going to these drying out joints, they'd rather go to one of these state hospitals and get, uh, the same care for less money or for no money at all. I, uh, more or less, uh, uh, liked the message that you put on this second tape. I don't know when I'll get to hear it, but I will eventually.
I usually like to put the tape recorder on when I'm in the bathroom or in the bathtub and listen to it then and there, or late at night when everyone's asleep. See, I get home about midnight or so, and then I listen to an hour or two of recordings before I hit the hay. And, uh, one thing that you, I liked about you closing your talking letter is, uh, uh, I forgot exactly how it goes now. God bless you and keep you in AA. Never heard it expressed that way, but it sounds kind of nice.
Well, I don't know what else I can put on here or what else I can say, but, uh, I'm gonna put on the back of the box here to, you should play this side first so you get this message here, and then after you hear this side, you can, you know, listen to it. More or less, uh, play the other sides because all the other three sides will have the conference of Chicago. I, uh, will be getting a conference from Fort Wayne, Indiana. That is if my friend from Indiana goes down that way.
See, uh, I more or less exchange these conferences, and, uh, here's a fellow I said that went over his house and set up two machines at 15 inches per second and one machine at
[00:15:04]
seven and a half inches per second and put two 2400 reels of tape or blank on there and made ourselves each a copy of the three and three quarter inches per second and I still didn't get a chance to hear it but I will occasionally and I'll let you know of it. I, by not hearing it, I mean hearing all of it, I've heard Charlie J., he's a lot clearer than the copy I have and Shy W. is very good too but I'll get to hearing the rest of them one of these days and straighten out my collection and maybe I'll send you another list of the other speakers I've got but I have some tapes that I want to erase, some that I recopied on other tapes and got to erase them there. See I more or less got a bulk eraser and any tape before I put any recording under I erase it even if it's a new tape it's supposed to make it better than new when you erase it and when you're dealing in these four track tapes like this here it's good to have a bulk eraser otherwise you have to run the tape through your machine four times to erase it because a lot of times that if you record over the tape it doesn't erase everything and you will hear something in the background but with this tape bulk eraser you just plug it in and turn the reel around a couple times and everything on there is completely erased and it cost about 18 or so dollars there but it's well I made good use of it it's well worth the price. This tape here that you sent here on this reel here looks like some of the tapes that I bought are one of our department stores we're selling these here for oh about $2.98 or something and that's a pretty good price but I don't care too much for these reels these reels aren't reinforced strong enough but I don't think that we're gonna be pitching horseshoes with them so they're good enough to serve the purpose. I more or less do use some of that their white tape the tape and white boxes and this place I buy them that it is supposed to be splice free and I more or less try to use Mylar tape it's I think a little better I get better service out of it than acetate however if you run it you could run into some of this here Mylar that instead of breaking it stretches and if that happens there you more or less lose out on part of recording there and not only on one track but four tracks if you got four track recordings but so far I've been pretty lucky and didn't have that trouble happen to me but there could always be a first time so Bill I will say goodbye now and be looking forward to exchanging some other tapes with you and maybe you can more or less drop me a card or something as to what sort of tapes you want me to put on your other reel after you get this and after you hear it like I say I'll mark it on the box to listen to this track first and tell me what you think of these people on this side here incidentally there at this Dr. Bob's I know now that it is not
[00:20:10]
the same one that you have because this is from Cleveland and you mentioned that Dr. Bob's talk that you have was made in Detroit of 1948 so that's about all for now and there's wishing you and your wife and your loved ones the best of everything just one day at a time and I'll copy that little saying that you say God bless you and keep you in a a bye now
