The following meeting was taped at Seattle, Washington on July 3rd, 1966. The speakers were Dr. Turnbull of Seattle, who was an old friend of AA's, and was a very close friend of Dr. Sam Shoemaker's, and yours truly, the wind-up meeting of the Northwestern Regional Conference. Now in AA, we have been extremely fortunate throughout our history in that we have had the wonderful, kindly, knowing support of men and women in religion. This is not a religious organization as you know, of course, but we do have a very serious spiritual program. And God himself certainly, I believe, saw to it that the founders of this fellowship were guided many times by the faith, by the helping hands of men and women in religion. Need I mention only a few? Sam Shoemaker, Father Ed Dowling, and let us not forget dear Sister Ignatia, who pried open for the first time the doors of the hospitals to the alcoholics. And so it has been all through men of understanding, women of understanding, men and women of compassion, who have always come to the assistance and to whom we could always turn in those terrible dark moments when we were drinking alcoholics. We in the Northwest, and in Seattle in particular, have also been fortunate in that same way, that we have had the support, the love, and the consideration of the clergy and the religious people of this area, of this community. And this is the fact that church after church has thrown open the doors of its halls and meeting places for the meetings of AA, charging us very little, if anything, towards the expenses. And the time will outnumber when you and I, in those dark moments of depression, could go up to some clergyman of whatever faith it might have been and find there an understanding counselor and friend, and perhaps take our fifth step with it. And so it has been always that we must be grateful not only to the founders of this society of fellowship, but to those men and women of God who gave their help and their counsel to us through all these years. And so today we are extremely fortunate in having one of the clergymen of this city, not the least of our friends among those people. And it is my extreme pleasure and honor to present to you…
